Low Porosity hair is hair that has very tight cuticles and isn’t able to readily take in any moisture. Hair cuticles are the outermost layers that protect our hair shaft. Since the cuticles are closed on this hair type, it is great at keeping in moisture. However, getting it to penetrate can be difficult.
Characteristics
1. Hard to Get Moisture In: Since the cuticles on this hair type are so tight it can take the moisture molecules a longer time to penetrate it.
2. Protein Doesn’t Do So Well: Protein treatments strengthen hair providing them with many nutrients and proteins. However, LP hair can be protein-sensitive since it does not absorb very well into the tight cuticles. It causes build-up which makes the hair stiff and weak. For this reason, it is best to use it in moderation.
3. Takes Longer To Dry: Water doesn’t easily get into the cuticles or get absorbed which causes a longer time to dry.
4. Product Buildup: Since products don’t easily absorb into our hair, the leftover products tend to build up on our scalp. This build-up can clog the hair follicles and prevent hair growth.
Caring for Low Porosity Hair
- Heat/Steam: Use steam or heat when deep conditioning so that the product can better penetrate your hair. The heat allows the cuticles to open up which means more moisture getting in.
- Humectants: Humectants draw moisture from the environment into your hair and help it stay there.
- Say No to Heavy Products: Heavy oils and butter-based products tend to sit on the hair and cause product buildup. To avoid this, use moisturizers with lightweight ingredients in the formula.
- Cleanse Well: It is important to wash your hair thoroughly. You might also want to consider using a clarifying shampoo at least once a month especially if you’ve used many products. This will ensure you have a clean slate and allow the products to work more effectively.
- Preserve moisture: To keep moisture in your hair you can use protective styles. When the hair is out and exposed to the air it can dry it out. However, you can prevent that with many styles such as twists and braids.
